Burn ISO using Vista, Use to Format other PC to XP?
Can I download and burn an XP ISO from a Vista computer and then boot and install XP on another computer. I have Vista only but trying to help my son with a XP system.
Believe me, I really don’t want to do this. The other PC belongs to my son and he has a legit install of XP Home on it but… It will not boot. It will not go into Safe Mode, and it will not go to the Recovery Console. We keep getting a 000021a error on boot.
The answer to that is to re-install but he never had the original CD with XP Home (legit) on it. It is probably on a recovery partition on the desktop but I cannot get at it.
2nd question: Can anyone direct me to making a boot CD that has DOS utilities on it? I know my way around DOS and I could try Chkdisk, MBR etc.
Yes, I’ve downloaded and made an antivirus CD and it found nothing to repair. The desktop PC is only a year old, hardware seems just fine.
Any help appreciated and thanks in advance.

There’s nothing illegal about burning an XP .iso to a CD.
If the computer has a legit install that means you have a
license to run XP on that computer. The media used to
install it is irrelevant. You can download and burn it on
any machine that has the capability to do it, including Vista.
Just make sure it’s the same edition of XP that was
originally installed.
Making a DOS or Win98 boot disk will not help you, as
those operating systems use FAT formatted hard disks
and XP uses NTFS. If the system can be repaired, using
DOS utilities will cause more damage.
The best answer is to go to the support web site of the
manufacturer of the PC and purchase the CDs for
that specific model. They not only have the Operating
System but also the drivers for the hardware on the machine.
That will save you a lot of headaches if you must do a full
re-install.
If there is a repair partition, the only way to get to it is
to use the specified keystrokes on boot. That can be
found in the manual. If you don’t have that, the web site
of the manufacturer is again the place to look.
